Kaeja d'Dance - Established in 1991, Kaeja d’Dance is an award-winning Toronto based dance Company that is renowned for creating provocative contemporary dance works, dance films, digital innovations and empowering education, community & outreach programs. The Company collaborates with international and local dance artists, composers, musicians, stage & costume designers to create performances that push boundaries of Canadian contemporary dance and infuse local and international communities with exciting new experiences both on and off the stage. JOB DESCRIPTION 

Kaeja d’Dance is seeking a strong and resourceful Managing Director to grow the Company into its 4th decade. We invite folks who have a strong grasp of organizing systems and tools, along with excellent administrative, financial management, revenue generating and proposal writing skills. We are looking for an individual who loves working as a team, is an idea contributor with new and existing initiatives, works independently and can oversee a small staff, collaborators and projects. Multitasking and attention to details are required. Working in tandem with Artistic Directors Karen and Allen Kaeja, the position is remote and in person as needed.

 

Working with one of Canada’s longest established and vibrant contemporary dance companies, This position (40 hours/week) is for a knowledgeable, ambitious individual to take on a leading role in the development of the Company and its place in the dance sector. The ideal candidate is a highly organized, self-directed problem solver, and has at least five years working experience in the Non-profit Arts Sector related to this role. The candidate has exceptional judgement with a commitment to the collaborators, audience and the donor experience. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO

  • Granting: Manage all Company operating and project grants from the preparation of applications to the submission of final reports

  • Development: Design and implementing strategies to increase revenue

    • Recruit new community and corporate partners for donations, sponsorships and in-kind support

    • Steward relationships with multiple stakeholders including donors, sponsors, politicians, volunteers

  • Financial Management: Develop the annual budget

    • Develop multi-year budget for operating grants

    • Present budget to the board for approval

    • Provide quarterly reports and facilitate annual financial statements preparation

    • Work with a PT bookkeeper to prepare monthly reconciliations, process payroll liabilities and maintain accurate records of financial transactions

    • Issue ROEs, T4s and T4As alongside bookkeeper

    • Oversee the annual audit alongside bookkeeper and Kaeja Treasurer

    • Develop and support fundraising initiatives and create annual donor receipts

    • Research new and updated funding opportunities from public and private sources

  • Project management of large-scale productions and multi-year community engagement activities

  • Manage human resources aspects of recruiting and training new staff, updating HR policies, and preparing contracts for staff and free-lance collaborators

  • Work alongside Board President and Board to develop new policies and procedures

  • Contribute to development of strategies to reduce and remove barriers to employment, participation and opportunities

  • Team with 2 full-time Artistic Directors and supervise 1 full-time Project & Communications Manager (PCM), part-time employees and contract staff and volunteers

  • Collaborate with the Project and Communications Manager on the development of marketing and communication strategies

 

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE DESIRED

  • Strong interest in the performing arts, community engagement, public space activation and city building

  • A team player comfortable with and contributing to evolving new ideas and updating current ones

  • Excellent organizational skills: managing critical paths, creating timelines, maintaining schedules, tracking/documenting materials, proofreading copy, etc

  • Critical eye for attention to details in all facets of Company and communications

  • A strong and vital approach, commitment and implementation towards anti-racism and anti-harassment and the lived experience of marginalized collaborators and team members, volunteers and audiences

  • Experience managing small teams and training new team members and/or volunteers

  • Advanced budget understanding and management

  • Advanced problem-solving skills. You think ahead, anticipate potential problems/outcomes and plan accordingly

  • Highly developed research and grant writing skills and a track record of writing successful funding submissions

  • Fluency in English

  • Experience with private fundraising such as corporate sponsorship or foundation donations

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Comfortable working with a variety of stakeholders such as presenters, arts councils, volunteers, our Board, current and potential donors, local politicians, small business owners and community groups with a commitment to quality customer service

  • Ability to prioritize deadlines

 

MUST BE COMFORTABLE USING 

  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Excel or other spreadsheet data management software

  • Google Products: Google Drive, Google Docs primarily

  • Project management software such as Trello or other

  • Familiarity with bookkeeping processes. Knowledge of Quickbooks Online

  • Familiarity with the various funding bodies portals for online applications

  • Experience using CRA website

 

HOURS 

This is a full-time position Monday to Friday, 40hrs/week. Occasional over-time/evening or weekend work as needed during production times, compensated as lieu time. We are open to applicants from a wide range of education backgrounds and lived experience for this position. Management experience in the arts or other not-for-profit organizations will be essential to success in this role. Individuals who feel they have the skills and competencies required to meaningfully contribute to this position are encouraged to apply. This role is multifaceted and requires an individual who is comfortable wearing many hats and multi-tasking.

  • This position primarily works remotely and should have access to a strong internet. A laptop will be provided from the Company. Employees will be asked to occasionally attend in-person meetings at the Kaeja office located in the Annex as required. The Managing Director will be required on-site for productions that may take place in the evenings and on weekends.
